Having investigated other options we stuck with the specified windows in our PHPP for the project as Baskill Future Proof Plus (Munster Joinery). Almost any window can be used providing they meet the guidelines of Passive house construction – invariably this will result in a triple glazed unit that has a thermally broken frame.

In this day in age we should think about windows as mini boilers as annually they are capable of capturing more solar energy than they will lose through their fabric.

The window above will have a total U-Value of 0.98W/m²K, current Building regulations require a minimum U-Value of 2.00W/m²k. In effect the above example would mean that this Passive House window is twice as effective at retaining energy within the building.

A future post regarding overall U-Values is to follow.
